If you or your company owns 2007 and 2008, diesel pick-ups or "on road" diesel trucks, you may wonder why the truck manufacturer is so adamant about using motor oil that meets the American Petroleum Institute (API) CJ-4 specification in the engine. You may be wondering if can "get by" with an engine oil that does not show this designation on the label. The answer is NO! You can not "get by" with a diesel engine oil for older meeting the API "CI-4" or "CI-4 PLUS" specifications of these engines. There is a high probability that expensive damage will result if you try.

How to start all this? A few years ago, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) decided that from 2007 model year, strict new limits would be placed on the emissions of heavy duty diesel engines on the road and collect applications. This would limit the amount of nitrogen oxide and particulates emitted by the exhaust pipe. EPA determined that through a combination of engine, ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) and new engine oil technology, these new vehicles will reduce harmful pollution by 95 percent.

The most important of these changes are the addition of engine exhaust gas after-treatment devices and increased exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) rates. Both changes require a radically different approach to the formulation of a diesel engine oil.

The exhaust gas after-treatment devices to be used are "diesel particulate filters. These filters remove particulate soot from exhaust gases to allow much cleaner emissions. Collected particle filter is removed by burning at high operating temperatures. Older generations of diesel engine oils containing the additives that can connect or damage to the particulate filters. The new CJ-4 engine oils have strict limits on sulfur, sulfated ash and phosphorus content. A clogged or damaged filter particle is not only very expensive to clean or replace, can cause a severe reduction in fuel economy due to increased back pressure.

Another important change that the EPA's mandate was to reduce the sulfur content of diesel fuel by a massive 97%. From September 2006, sulfur levels in fuel diesel (for road use) is limited to 15 parts per million (ppm) from 500 ppm. This was done so that the fuel would not damage the exhaust new devices subsequent treatment. This was a concern for many as an additive sulfur was essential for the lubrication provided to the fuel pumps and injectors. Companies fuel had no mandate to replace the sulfur with another component to provide lubrication of the pump and injectors. It's a good idea to add a fuel additive aftermarket for diesel fuel to prevent premature wear and injector pump. This is a good idea for all diesel engines using ULSD fuel. Sure that the additive is designed to provide lubrication and fuel system that is compatible with particulate filters and exhaust ULSD fuel.

With the filter out particles exhaust emissions, is performed the task of removing nitrogen oxides by rising gas recirculation (EGR) rates of up to 35%. Recirculation devices to redirect some of the exhaust gases normally emitted by the exhaust pipe back into the engine. This rate increase generates more soot and acids as well as operating temperatures increase. This was another reason for the radical changes in the design of the CJ-4 specification. These hostile operating conditions require that new motor oil have a higher heat resistance, a larger set of dispersants to control higher levels of soot and a greater ability to prevent the deposition and oxidation. CJ-4 oils are also less volatile which means they are more resistant consumption.

CJ-4 oils provide the ultimate in performance and protection for post-2007 diesel engines. To eliminate the hassle of fleets of different values diesel engine oils for trucks built before and after model year 2007, CJ-4 oils are designed to be "compatible" with pre-2007 engines diesel. Fleet owners can store only a CJ-4 diesel engine oil for all service diesel trucks.
